Winifred T. Tompkins passed from this world to eternal rest on March 24, 2009. She was born in Florida on March 23, 1914, in the family's cabin on Little Haw Creek to parents, Charles B. Thigpin and Mary Buckles Thigpin. Winifred grew up with her sister, Nellie, on their farm at Thigpin Corners, which is located on Route 305 and Little Haw Creek in rural Flagler County.

Winifred graduated from Central High School in Barberville and later trained in nursing in Orlando. She married Leonard G. Tompkins in 1939, and earned her bachelor’s degree from Stetson University a few years afterward. She was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in DeLand.

Winifred is survived by her two sons, Steve and Dan and six grand-and great-grandchildren. She was especially fond of her niece, Jean Studeman and her nephew, Mel Jones, both of North Carolina.

Burial will be in the Seville Cemetery with a memorial service at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations should be given to St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 319 West Wisconsin Avenue, DeLand, FL 32720.
