		    Charles P. McCullar
Funeral services for Charles P. McCullar, 95, of Hastings, Fla., who was called home to be with his Lord and Savior, Tuesday, Feb 17, 2009, will be held at 11:30 a.m. this Saturday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church on C.R. 204. Visitation will be held Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Craig Funeral Home.
Mr. McCullar was born in Daytona Beach, Fla., in 1914 and attended Holly Hill Elementary School. During the 1920s, his family relocated to farmland they owned in Hastings because of economic times. There, he attended and graduated from Hastings High School. An interesting note is that during his last two years of school, the county's budget ran out of money and, since his house was the last one on the route, he was given the keys to the school bus and asked to drive the students to and from school each day. His senior year, the St. Johns County School District paid him a dollar a week to drive the route.
Mr. McCullar was a World War II veteran and served in the Pacific Rim with the United States Coast Guard for three years. After his discharge from the service, he was given the opportunity to start the Rural Mail Carrier's Route for the Hastings area and served as the route carrier for 28 years.
His family was founding members of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, in which he served as a deacon. He was an outdoor enthusiast, was an avid sportsman and fisherman, and his favorite activity was to catch red sea bass. He was a lifelong founding member of the Dinner Island Hunting Club and was well-known and appreciated for his garden vegetables.
Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Corrine, of Hastings; daughters, Cheryl Nottingham, (Add) Nassawadox, Va., Louise (Ken) Hillier of Jacksonville, and Carol McCullar (Steve) Brandvold of St. Augustine; son, Charles (Judi) McCullar Jr. of Bunnell; and eight grandchildren, Addison Nottingham III of Virginia, Aarin Nottingham, Nassawadox, William Hillier, Jacksonville, Wesley Cordell, Palm Coast, and Ashley, Adam, Bryce and Zachary Brandvold, St. Augustine.
His brothers, James and Earl, and sisters, Edith, Belle, Caroline and Olive, preceded him in death.
