Mrs. Altajane Holden Caudill, 87, 514 Caudill Place, Elizabethton, died Tuesday, January 16, 2007, at her residence following an extended illness.

A native of Bunnell, Fla., she was the daughter of the late Tom Edward and Ethel Bortree Holden.

Altajane Caudill was a 1940 graduate of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, School of Pharmacy, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She and her husband were both pharmacists and they owned and operated the Watauga Pharmacy in Elizabethton for 29 years. She was a licensed pharmacist in three states, North Carolina, Florida and Tennessee, before she retired.

She was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton, where she served as a chairperson of Circle 6 and on the Board of Missions. She was also a Methodist Youth Fellowship sponsor.

Mrs. Caudill and her husband, Julian, were involved in the Experiment in International Living Program which involved foreign college students living in their home. She was a member of the Elizabethton Women's Civic Club, the Elizabethton Dance Club, and was very active in the American Cancer Society, having served as president for several years. She was honored by her husband with a Paul Harris Fellow in the Elizabethton Rotary Club. Altajane enjoyed gardening and was a member of a Garden Club.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Caudill was preceded in death by her husband, Julian Terrell Caudill, and two sons, Terry Caudill and Tom Caudill.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Kail Hazelwood of Knoxville; her daughter-in-law, Charlotte Caudill of Elizabethton; three granddaughters and grandsons-in-law, Casey Caudill and Brian Ross of Johnson City, Caroline Caudill and Michael Clark of Elizabethton and Mara Caudill and Michael Gama-Lobo of Kinshasa, the DR Congo, Africa; two great-grandchildren, Cannon Clark and Marin Ross; a sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor and Roy Shutt of Ormond Beach, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Peggy Weiss of New Mexico; five nieces, Anne, Lucy, Jane, Leah and Ethelanne; four nephews, Norman, Lee, Peter and Harry; and two special friends, Virginia Caudill of Yellow Springs, Ohio, and Radchanee Ruth of Chicago, Ill.

The funeral service for Mrs. Caudill will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday, January 20, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home with Rev. Buford Hankins and Rev. Bill Carter officiating. Music will be under the direction of Becky Hale, organist. The family will receive friends in the funeral chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service. The grave side service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, January 21, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery at 2:55 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations to the First United Methodist Church, 325 East E Street, Elizabethton, TN 37643.
