Daniel Martin Deen

Daniel Martin (Uncle Dan) Deen was born 18 Aug 1857, Baxley, Appling CO, GA, died 23 Jan 1930, in the Holland Home, Flagler CO, FL, eight miles west of Bunnell. He was the son of James Deen and his wife Hulda Grey, married 13 Oct 1880, Baxley, Appling CO, GA, Martha Elnora Tuten, dau of David Rivers Tuten and his wife Flora Elizabeth Miles, born 12 May 1866, Baxley, Appling CO, GA, died 05 Jul 1928, 809 East Church Street, Gainesville, Alachua CO, FL. Both buried Evergreen Cemetery, Gainesville, Alachua CO, FL.

His first profession, according to Deen Family tradition, was the job of tutoring the children of the Henry Deen (his Uncle) household. After marriage it is presumed he farmed in Appling CO as the son, Thomas S. Deen, told Mary Ketus Deen Holland, it was his job to take a sack of corn to the mill at Henry Deen's on Saturday to be ground into meal and grits. He told her that he would keep moving his sack to the end of the line so he would have more time to fish in the mill pond before returning home with the meal and grit

He moved to this area around 1903 to operate the turpentine still in Haw Creek (later St. Johns Park - just west of Hunter Branch) that Lambert and Moody had put in operation for George W. Deen, brother to Daniel Martin Deen, located at the corner of sections 21, 22, 27 and 28. His oldest daughter Maud and her husband came to work with him. This still apparently had been put into operation by J F Lambert and I. I. Moody for George W. Deen. It was later known as the Deen-Holland Still.

Uncle Dan is found on page 56 of the 1910 census of St. Johns CO, Precinct 7, as a boarder at the Eagerton Hotel with his occupation given as "Lumber Dealer." In the 1920 census of Flagler CO he is listed on page 10 residing in Bunnell with occupation given as "Produce Dealer."

After the demise of the turpentine business, he served as postmaster in Bunnell and operated a grocery store. He had built a home in Gainesville, FL and moved his wife and children there in 1904 - - dividing his time between Gainesville and Bunnell.

In Feb 1925, Mr. Joshua C. Geiger reopened the Bonita Café in Bunnell and also purchased Uncle Dan Deen's vegetable and grocery store. The café fronted on the Dixie Highway and the grocery fronted on Moody Blvd., but the rooms connected in the rear making it very convenient to handle both operations under one management.

"Uncle Dan's Place" was one of the most popular and well-known business stands in the county for groceries, fruits and vegetables.

Uncle Dan had served as Worshipful Master of the Holmesville Lodge No. 195 F & A M in Appling CO, GA. He demitted to the Palatka Lodge and in 1910 was appointed Master, Under Dispensation, to organize a lodge in Bunnell and was elected worshipful Master of Bunnell Lodge No 200 F & A M when it was chartered.

His grandsons, Dean Holland and Zachary G Holland, Jr and his great grandson, Kent Holland, have also served the Bunnell Lodge as Worshipful Master. Uncle Dan served as Worshipful Master for the Homesville Lodge No 195 in 1890, 1891, 1892, 1894, 1897, and 1898. He was also a Charter Member of Bunnell Chapter No 93, Order of Eastern Star. They were the parents of thirteen children;

He left for San Francisco, going by way of Tallahassee (to see his future wife Eva Deen who was attending the Florida State College for Women), and from there sailed for the Philippines on the steamer "Manchuria" on 09 Apr1908 arriving in Manila on 05 May1908.

He was posted in the mountains for two years, rarely seeing the face of another Caucasian. His third and last year in the Philippines was spent in a lowland station called Sara in the sugar producing territory. He returned to the United States via Hong Kong, Singapore, Panang, India, Arabia, Italy, Switzerland, France and England.

The Florida State Legislature abolished the seminary following her second year of study and established Florida State College for Women (FSCW) in Tallahassee and for the men, the University of Florida. She graduated Sigma Cum Laude from FSCW (now Florida State University) and received her master's degree from Peabody University in Nashville.
