Zachary Grantham Holland, son of Richard Holland and Bethany Barnes was born 09 Mar 1876, Wayne CO, NC, died 07 Mar 1941, St Johns Park, Flagler CO, FL, married 26 May 1900 Appling CO, GA to Flora Maude Deen, dau of Daniel Martin Deen and Martha Elnora Tuten, born 16 Jun 1883, Baxley, Appling CO, GA, died 17 Dec 1966, Bunnell General Hospital, Bunnell, Flagler CO, FL. Both are buried Espanola Cemetery, Espanola, Flagler CO, FL

The family is listed on page 58 of the 1910 census of St. Johns County with his occupation given as "Merchant" and on page 34 of the 1920 census of Flagler County with his occupation given as "Farmer-General."

Zachary Holland came to Appling County, Georgia about 1892 as others of his family had followed the turpentine business from North Carolina. In 1903 he and his wife and daughter moved to Haw Creek (later known as St. Johns Park) to join her father, Daniel Martin Deen in the operation of a turpentine still and a commissary and quarters for the laborers. After the demise of the naval stores he operated a general store, The Stillville Merchant, for many years and also farmed.

He was very active in the political affairs of the area and at the creation of Flagler County. He was appointed by Gov. Sidney Johnston Catts to serve as the first County Commissioner from the St. Johns Park district, serving from 1917 until 1926. His name is inscribed on the cornerstone of the Flagler County Courthouse as a member of the Board of County Commissioners when the building was erected. He was again elected a commissioner in 1929 and served until 1934.

The family was members of the Haw Creek Methodist Church and Sunday School and took an active part in it's formation, and continued to participate in it's many activities during its existence, including being a member of Board of Stewards, Sunday School teacher, and a member of the Dorcas Society, etc. They later moved their membership to the Bunnell Methodist Church. They were the parents of nine children;

He attended the University of Florida and worked part time for the Gainesville Fire Dept. He worked in turpentine, timber and pulpwood and was supervisor for the Works Progress Administration for Flagler County, building the Bunnell Civic Center and the Flagler County Jail.

He was elected for three terms as Superintendent of Public Instruction of Flagler County. His first term was interrupted when he entered the U S Army during WW II in the Tank Destroyers Division.

He served on the Bunnell City Commission with one term as Mayor. He was the administrator of the Bunnell General Hospital for seven years. He was a member of Bunnell Lodge #200 F & A M, serving as Worshipful Master, a Shriner and member Rotary Club. He was a member of the Bunnell Methodist Church, serving on the Board of Stewards.

In order to finish high school, Hazel moved to Bunnell to live with her sister Zelda when their mother died. She graduated from Florida State College for Women in Tallahassee and retired after teaching for 37 years in Bunnell Schools.

His father had purchased property in the St. Johns area through a newspaper advertisement from the St. Johns Development Company and in 1923 Mr. Giebert and his son George moved to Flagler County.

He attended Arvada High School in Denver. When he first came to what is now Flagler County, FL he worked on the Holland farm for $1.25 per day. He later worked at Warner's Dairy and for Salter's Dairy until going to work for the Standard Oil Company in 1929. George worked in road construction work and in a shipyard in Jacksonville.

After marriage, he and Myrtice lived in High Springs, Daytona, and Bunnell until George accepted a job with Hooper Construction Company in 1931 and over the next 14 years living in many places, often staying with the Holland's in St Johns Park and calling that home until they settled in Jacksonville in Dec 1945.

They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at the Women's Club of Jacksonville on 24 Mar 1978. Issue;

He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star and was posthumously awarded the WW II Cross of Military Service by the United Daughters of the Confederacy through the General Joseph Eggleston Johnston Chapter of Bunnell for his service in the U S Armed Forces during the time of war and being a descendant of a Confederate Veteran. He was a farmer, a member and director of The Florida Planters.

Zack (or Zeke as he was called in NC) participated in the organization of the Florida Fruit and Vegetable Association, serving as a director; helped organize and was a director in the National Potato Council, representing Florida in this organization; helped organize the Florida Potato Council and the North Florida Potato Council and the Hastings Potato Exchange.

Zack served on a number of agricultural committees for Doyle Conner, Commissioner of Agriculture. He was the Flagler County representative on the St. Johns River Management Committee under Governors Farris Bryant, Hayden Bums and Claude Kirk. He left the agribusiness in 1972, becoming a real estate broker.

He was a member of the Hastings Masonic Lodge #183 F & A M, serving as Worshipful Master, transferred to Bunnell Lodge #200 and served as Worshipful Master, member of the Shrine. The family were members of the Hastings Methodist Church and Bunnell Methodist Church. They were also charter members of the St. Johns Southern Methodist Church of St. Augustine. Zach served as a member of the board of stewards of these churches, and Mary Kete was active in the Sunday Schools and the ladies societies.

Mary Kete graduated from Bunnell High School in 1935 and in Oct 1935 entered Southern College of Business at Orlando for a commercial course. She later completed a business course at Massey Business College, Jacksonville and worked several years as a stenographer and bookkeeper for the Florida Re-employment Office in Jacksonville, then a year after marriage, became a full time housewife.

She is the unofficial historian of the Deen family and has written several books. Books that I know she has written are: “Our Heritage A Genealogy of the Descendants of Jacob Carter (1974),” “Our Heritage, A genealogy of the Descendants of Philip Deen (1979),” “Our Heritage, A Genealogy of the Descendants of Elisha Holland (1966),” “Our Heritage, A Genealogy of the Descendants of John Miles (1974),” “Our Heritage, A Genealogy of the Descendants of Cynthia Tuten (1980-co authored with Allen Vernon Tuten),” “Bunnell High School 1917-1967 (1992),” and “First Families of Flagler (1995)."

She edited in 1997 a book published by the St Johns Park Pioneers entitled “Unto This Land, A History of the St Johns Park Area of Flagler County, Florida and the Pioneer Settlers and Their Descendants.”

Mary Ketus jointed the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) on 14 May 1962 with eligibility based on the service record of Joseph Marion Johnston, Company I, 25th GA Inf Reg. She has received the Jefferson Davis Medal from Division

She was a co-founder of the General Joseph Eggleston Johnston Chapter, UDC and served as President (1968-1970; 1970-1972). She served as UDC District II Director (1960-1962; 1978-1980) and UDC Division Treasurer (1964-1966).. Issue;

She was injured fatally on 28 Jun 1952 at her home in Hastings when a truck was accidently backed over her while she played in the yard. She was rushed to Flagler Hospital in St Augustine, but died shortly after reaching there.

He worked as an engineer for US Sugar Corporation in Clewiston, and also worked for FMC Corporation in Jonesboro, AK before returning home to farm with his father. They built their home on a plot adjoining his parents.

She graduated from Palm Beach Junior College as a registered nurse and later received a BS Degree in Nursing from Arkansas State University, Jonesboro, AK Issue;

In Jul 1937, he was employed by the Bunnell Ice Company. Earl worked at various jobs in Bunnell before moving to Alabama and working for Hoover Construction Company which took him to several locations, then worked for the government at the Jacksonville Naval Air Station. Marjorie owned and operated two flower shops in Jacksonville.
